November 7-9, 2010 | New Orleans, LA
Academic Director: Professor Kathy Pearson
Competency: Management
We live in a world of uncertainty. In this environment of increasing technological and global instability, the risks of ignoring uncertainty are greater than ever—but so are the rewards of actively addressing it. Most organizations plan as if the world were predictable, developing point forecasts, budgets, and initiatives that will succeed as long as the external environment cooperates. Indeed, managers often view uncertainty as an obstacle interfering with the company's existing plans rather than as the unknown that can create opportunity. This session will introduce an outside-in view of doing planning that actually embraces external uncertainties as a source of superior opportunities and profit, and present a step-by-step methodology for crafting an adaptive strategy under conditions of uncertainty -- around the concepts of scenario thinking, real options, peripheral vision, and dynamic monitoring.
Session Objectives
- Understand critical thinking traps when crafting strategy under uncertainty
- Introduce an adaptive planning methodology using alternative futures, in order to profit from external uncertainties
- Using real options thinking to develop a portfolio of strategic initiatives that balances commitment and flexibility
- Discuss the importance of developing peripheral vision around the organization’s markets for sensing weak signals, and acting on them through options thinking
- Monitoring the future via strategic radar.
Key concepts and conversations will also include:
- Understand why great companies fail
- Learn the attributes of long-lived organizations
- Balancing the learning and performance organization
- Developing a vigilant organization and superior peripheral vision.
