NBTA Foundation Publishes 2008 Salary Survey

The NBTA Foundation, the education and research foundation of the National Business Travel Association (NBTA), provided NBTA members with the results of the Travel Management Compensation and Benefits Survey. The report is designed to allow individual travel managers to compare their compensation levels and benefits to those of their peers. The 2008 Travel Management Compensation and Benefits Survey, based on the responses of 279 corporate travel managers working in the United States and Canada, shows the average total compensation of respondents, including salaries and bonuses, has grown 6.9 percent higher from last year to $97,383.

NBTA Foundation Chair Fay Beauchine commented, “In today’s dynamic business environment, travel managers are on the front lines, delivering cost-savings, driving cost-avoidance, and creating value to help companies meet strategic goals. Travel management expertise and know-how are more crucial now than ever, and that value is reflected in the growth we have seen in travel managers’ salaries.”

The average year-over-year salary increase among respondents varied by job title:

Vice Presidents saw a salary decrease of 29.6 percent to $112,146

Directors, a 12.6% increase to $139,472

Managers, a 1.5% increase to $89,656

Supervisors, a 20.5% decrease to $60,214

Coordinators/Specialists, a 1.8% increase to $59,823

Average compensation showed a clear correlation to sales volume of the employing company, with total compensation (includes salary, bonus and commission) tending to increase with increasing company sales volumes. Respondents working for companies with annual sales of less than $100 million made 33 percent less on average than those working for companies with more than $5 billion in sales.

The report provides detailed data on respondents’ gender, job titles, professional certifications, years of experience, and more. NBTA members can access the complete report via resource library.
