Office of Police, Department of Homeland Security
This webinar will provide an update of the implementation of the REAL ID Act. Over the past two years, nearly a dozen states have passed legislation that would allow its respective motor vehicle agency to implement the requirements of the REAL ID Act. In October, the Department of Homeland Security announced an update to the states’ level of compliance in meeting the REAL ID standards.
Steve Yonkers is the Director of Identity and Credentialing/REAL ID Program at the Department of Homeland Security. His office is chiefly responsible for reviewing the states’ efforts to meet the REAL ID standards and coordinate DHS’s efforts to enforce the REAL ID Act among the relevant agencies and departments. Mr. Yonkers participated in the 2017 Capitol Hill Summit and a webinar hosted in September. A link to that webinar can be found here.
The webinar will explain how this may potentially affect domestic travel of U.S. travelers depending on their state of residence in January 2018, and the requirement that all domestic travelers have REAL ID compliant identification by October 1, 2020.
At the end of the session, participants should be able to:
• Understand the states are in implementing REAL ID and the progress made to date;
• Understand how REAL ID applies to state issued driver's licenses and ID cards and
what alternatives there are for identification at the checkpoint if their state is not
compliant with the REAL ID Act; and
• Use this information to help educate their membership on these upcoming
requirements in order to minimize any disruption to travel plans.
Complimentary to all
