Message From the Office of the GBTA President – Leadership Update

Dear GBTA Members,

As a valued member of GBTA, I want you to know that, after ten years at the organization, Michael W. McCormick has chosen to step down to pursue new opportunities. Furthermore, Scott Solombrino has been appointed as Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer of the Association, effective immediately. Mr. McCormick will remain in an advisory role to Scott Solombrino and the Board to ensure a smooth transition as GBTA prepares for the 51st edition of our annual Convention this August in Chicago.

Since assuming the position of Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer in August 2009, Mr. McCormick has led our organization through a period of unprecedented development, expansion and growth, effectively building and advancing the operation of GBTA and its presence internationally. We extend our sincerest gratitude to Mr. McCormick for his leadership and unwavering commitment to our organization and we welcome you to join us in wishing him the best of luck in his next endeavor.

We are thrilled to welcome Mr. Solombrino as GBTA’s new Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer and gratefully appreciate his willingness to take on this critical role. We are confident that he will lead GBTA into the future with great accomplishment, distinction and success. Please note that Mr. Solombrino’s former role as president of GBTA Allied Leadership Council will be assumed immediately by Dorothy Dowling, Chief Marketing Officer & SVP, Best Western Hotels & Resorts, who previously served as the Council’s Vice President.

Christle Johnson currently serves as the Vice President of Travel & Business Services for Johnson Downie, a boutique executive search firm that specializes solely in partners of law firms. In addition to overseeing the meetings and travel for the employees, recruiters, candidates and firms they are working with, she is also tasked with the development and implementation of their travel program. Christle launched her career in the travel industry 23 years ago as a Sales Manager for a large regional travel agency before spending almost 15 years with National Car Rental as a Director, Strategic Accounts. Always seeking to improve her knowledge in the industry, Christle earned her Certified Corporate Travel Manager (CCTE) designation from GBTA and Cornell University (2007), her Certificate of Professional Development for completion of The Global Leadership Professional Program at The Wharton School (2009), her Global Leadership Professional (GLP) Designation from The Wharton School (2010), and her Global Travel Professional (GTP) Certification (2012). She has received numerous awards including the GBTA Business Travel Professional Service Award in 2009, the GBTA Foundation Scholarship Recipient in 2007 and was both the Austin BTA Allied Member of the Year and a Texas BTA Allied Member of the Year Nominee in 2003. She was elected to serve as President of GBTA during the 2015 Special Election and will serve a two-year term.
