Project-based business travel is extremely diverse, spanning a variety of different business objectives. Despite its diversity, there are key underlying trends that can be used by marketers, supplier sales teams and travel managers to increase revenue, cut costs and improve customer and employee satisfaction. This study was conducted in order to better understand a key part of the business travel market that is rarely recognized as its own distinct segment with its own distinct needs. No large-scale effort has yet been undertaken to truly understand the current size of this market or attempt to analyze the segment’s market opportunity.
The research study was conducted over two phases. The first phase was purely qualitative and aimed to define project-based business travel. The definition was established through deep-dive interviews with a diverse set of travel managers, travel suppliers and project managers. The second phase was quantitative and based on business traveler surveys, ongoing business travel research conducted by GBTA, and analysis and research conducted by Rockport Analytics.
At the end of the session, participants should be able to:
- Define project-based travel
- Size of project-based travel market by trips, spend and average length of stay
- Top three project-based travel industries
- Lodging for project-based travel
