U.S. Tightens Visa Renewal Rules, Reduces Interview Waiver Period to 12 Months

The U.S. Department of State has tightened visa renewal rules by reducing the interview waiver period to 12 months. Now, only applicants whose previous visa expired within the past year may qualify for a waiver. Eligibility also requires applying in one’s home country, having no prior visa refusals (unless waived), and no apparent ineligibilities. Certain diplomatic and official visa holders remain exempt. Consular officers still have discretion to require interviews.
